- "Questor". High capacity for caring. Emotional face to the world. High sense of honor derived from internal values. 4.4% of total population.
has been me. I haven’t felt this lousey in quite sometime. Stay away. Stay far far away.
The worst of it passed yesterday but I am dealing with after-effects today and honestly. I don’t have time for this. I have laundry to do shopping to do and general living that would be lovely to do. Instead. I feel like my legs are spaghetti my head is full of air and my upper back and ribs have been beaten with a stick. Not nice. Not nice at all.
I’m being received tomorrow so the only good thing I can say is that this hit before that event. I would have been sad to have missed it.
Excuse me but I need to go lie down again for a bit. My cats have been hovering about me guarding me. They were in bed with me the entire day yesterday and Evan did a great job of nursing me and playing Mr. Mom. Unfortunately he’s had to carry on with alot of that today as well.
Prayers that this particular bug does not visit you and yours.
Lots of us seem to be running on empty when we go off. You me. Padre Mickey and others have come home with an illness. Maybe we should take better care of ourselves normally?
Yuck. I’m so sorry you’re sick! I emailed you; don’t worry about it until you can sit up without passing out.
So if I remember correctly our prayers were answered (thanks be to God!). Now we’re off on the part for prayers for recovery right?
My recent cold and headache and sore throat and fever were cured by a lovely tri-bubble-pack prayer called Azithromycin. Lovely little bacteria killer there… available from your vet or whatever you people call them…
Yikes. Eileen. I hope you feel better SOON! Stuff like this can really knock you out so rest if you can.
Congrats on your reception. I hope you’re feeling better for it tomorrow.
Eileen. I hope today is better. It would be sad to miss your own reception into the church. So all this time you’ve only been posing as an Episcopalian and only today do you get real. Better late than never.

My Lord God. I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself and the fact that I think I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore I will trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear for you are ever with me and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. Thomas Merton
Bangladesh: Hurricane and Blogging

 <modified>2008-07-01T07:28+00:00

Back when we hosted the. JJ found the wonderful blog written by women and girls in Bangladesh. Kathy protect who helped set it up has now written to us (and on her blog. ) to tell us about the huge hurricane they have suffered and the lack of attention to their plight.
I am both shocked and dismayed at the lack of knowledge about the Category 5 hurricane that just plowed into Bangladesh on Thursday–a South Asian country with 140 million people and geographic size of the state of Wisconsin–but little international attention except for its cheap garment production-factories remitting migrant workers in the lay East and elsewhere. Army-Peacekeepers for the UN…According to many sources the death toil from Cyclone Sidr has risen to 1000+ and many more thousands are injured and/or lost their dwellings-livestock-livelihoods amidst the coming Bangladesh cold change of Bangladesh’s power grid and resultant loss of mobile internet and telecommunicate networks and safe potable water.
Amazingly the women and girls over at Bangladesh From Our View to be posted when they get electricity– a real tribute to their strength and also to the importance of the project of giving these people a express and getting it heard.
Thanks for FP for posting about this situation! This has been some tighten days for other bloggers and me.

The Feminist Blogosphere and Hill

 <modified>2008-03-26T00:20+00:00

A few days ago. I wondered why so were backing Hillary. A couple of days ago advised Hillary to act dumb desire a stewardess (ew) to get the votes of men. I'm not sure if she managed to secure Hillary's choose from the chick bloggers but she certainly inspired some snarky communicate posts. See and.
Speaking of Dowd do you think anyone ordain create dozens of articles from me on the injustice of the fact that being a happily married care of two with a dusty bear on no one will publish my quickly dashed off thoughts in prime NYT real estate and pay me big bucks for it? Because that's more or less the inverse of what MD has been getting paid for so desire (I'm so smart and pretty and I'm going to die alone).
If she dies alone it's because she has a go-nowhere personality and is getting her karma back for remarks desire the above. Or perhaps because she considers Donald Trump to be boyfriend material.
I just read the Dowd piece and it was not as annoying as I expected it to be. However. I've never gotten the comprehend that she gets that it's no picnic on the other side either--professionally and financially unsuccessful men have it just as rough as unattractive women. (A be of years back a financially struggling friend in his late 40s went through a divorce and then jumped into the dating pool. I got to listen to a lot of his dating war stories which were utterly harrowing.)
The thing with MoDo is and others have also pointed this out she seems to be to date only the high-flyers. If she broadened her horizons to consider more ordinary Joes perhaps she wouldn't be whinging and yammering about how looooonely she is and how no man wants a successful woman and waah poor little me.
Amy. I can't anticipate to know your friend or his dating life but if he had his sights set on the pretty younglings that might undergo been his problem. Financially struggling men who aren't that way due to irresponsibility or personality problems and who are content with women their own age and of add up looks can and do sight mates. Again. I don't experience your friend so I can't really adjudicate but so many times populate who complain that there are no good men or women out there are just too fussy.
I've got to be somewhat discreet since I wouldn't be surprised if he (or an ex-wife) reads here occasionally. My friend is fairly attractive broke and a lover of high grow (opera theater ballet classical music philosophy etc.) which unfortunately meant that the lower-middle class women he could plausibly draw didn't share his interests and he wasn't successful enough to hold onto the sort of professionally woman who shared those tastes. He put those interests front and center in his personals ads but still wound up meeting populate like the woman who said she liked ballet but couldn't label a hit one. Interrogated further it turned out that her only ballet experience had been lessons in elementary school. A recurring furnish in his stories was that his dates were so desperate to go out with someone anyone that they'd feign an interest in things that bored them stiff but were unable to act up the pretence for long. I believe he once wound up buying theater tickets to go out with some woman who he later discovered disliked Shakespeare but didn't have the guts to express him so beforehand. I won't go advance into claim details but I think you do have a point--I evaluate there is a tendency to aim higher than what one's own personal charms justify. (I like Jack Black in Shallow Hal by the way.)
Wow. If you ever doubted that the pro-life movement thinks of women not so much as people with individual personalities feelings and responsibilities in life but more as mindless thoughtless containers for babies this little video from InsideCatholic com ought make it pretty clear. For those who can't view the video it goes like this:
SCENE: a box factoryNARRATOR: If you thought there was a small come about that a baby was hidden in a box wouldn't you interact the box as if it held a baby just in case? SCENE: an ultrasound imageNARRATOR: So change surface if you think there's just a small chance that an unborn child is a baby shouldn't you treat it as if it were just in case? Something to evaluate about.
And shouldn't we treat women desire property you know just in case?
Hello. I apply your blog tremendously and would desire to request your permission to use a carve up from your blog (citing and linking you fully) for a thesis paper I am writing in check opposition to abstinence-only sex education. I can provide the end block quote I would desire to use as well as the entire paper if you desire. convey you. K.(I believe this comment supplies you with my gmail cerebrate...)
When I was pregnant with my now 18 yr old. I was active with the Monroe County Coaltion for a Woman's right to choose and I would tape a sign to my swollen intumesce that said "This is My Choice for My Body". Anti-choice people would come up to me and lay out that women were getting abortions when they were my size (8 mos- term) because they didn't like the color of the do by's eyes (unknown process several weeks or change surface months After birth)What I'm saying is their ignorance is their strength. If men gave bring forth there would be no challenge about legal abortion and if all anti-choicers had to adopt at least 5 children from unwanted or unable pregnancies. I bet they'd change their adjust as come up. "If These Walls Could Talk" about abortion should be shown in educate.."History is doomed to tell itself lest we forget.." No one cares about the children after they're here. how sad. only when they don't exist yet..
The anti-abortion movement has its share of nutcases. But obviously most abortion opponents compassionate deeply about children after birth. The video is odd and offensive. But it tries to alter an interesting inform: even many people who give legal abortion at least suspect that a fetus is a baby with value. After all what else could it be in the long run? So maybe give the baby a chance furnish birth and offer the baby for adoption. Melissa Janoski
How does one go by protecting a fetus without stepping over a owmans alter to free ordain according to the bible? How do you forbid treating her like a human being just because she is pregnant? Since when do woman furnish up their rights in order to undergo a child? Why dont people focus on woman who want to have their children and not worry about those you cannot deliver?
Feminist Review communicate believes that all opinions - positive and critical - are valuable and seeks to give voice to communities that remain on the margins. Our mission is to create verbally reviews from feminist perspectives to explore the world through an anti-oppression lens. We recognize that there are many feminisms and provide a space where those differences can be represented and explored. (That means we want you to add your opinions too.)
IslandIt's impossible to compare two PJ Harvey albums sonically because as anyone even with a minor interest in her knows she never records the same appear twice. Having said that for some reason this album reminds me of
(one of my all-time favourite records) and while sadly not in the same league it is her best work in a long time. From the stunning cover portrait which works perfectly into the atmosphere of the preserve to featuring some of her best songs
is half an amazing preserve. "Talk To You," is her absolute finest moment on preserve with "Grow. Grow. Grow," "White draw" and "Mountain and displease" also being superb and "Dear Darkness" certainly has its charm but the be of the album lets them drink especially the woeful "When Under Ether" and "Broken ingeminate," which pre-2000 wouldn't even undergo been a b-side. "The Piano" also isn't great and "Silence" and "Before Departure" are quite forgettable but do fit into the setting of the album perfectly. When the five or six tracks bring home the bacon they really work tremendously well - like the spooky gothic rural layers of "Grow," so cinematic and lush. "The Mountain" has a beautiful sad windswept lost feeling to it giving any PJ fan a very good reason to celebrate.

… Some people in speaking to me have compared this to McCarthyism but in an important way that analogy is not apt. I did not suffer my job. I am a tenured law professor at a terrific university and I can act to inform and create verbally and handle legal appeals as I undergo for the measure 28 years. I have received nothing but give over this from my university president provost dean and colleagues. During the McCarthy era some faculty members lost their jobs for what they wrote and said.
A key lesson learned from those tragic times is that academic freedom matters. advance has many costs but it exists so that academics ordain conclude free to convey themselves without fear of reprisal. It is based on the idea that everyone benefits from the remove exchange of ideas. Without academic freedom the reality is that many faculty members would be chilled and timid in expressing their views and the discussion that is essential for the advancement of thought would be lost.
This is not a liberal or conservative proposition. I said to Chancellor Drake that if I were conservative and my appointment had been blocked by liberals the alter would be justifiably outraged that “political correctness” had done me in. The truth is that a person’s politics should play no role in the decision to hire them for a faculty or administrative position. All that matters is that the individual be committed to creating an institution where all viewpoints ordain be respected and flourish. That is what academic freedom is all about.
My concern is that the message from this episode especially for my more junior colleagues who may aspire to be deans someday or for that be judges is that if you communicate out — liberal or conservative — you may suffer your come about at a position that you really be. …
It wasn’t until yesterday that I tuned into a CNN video online featuring an interview with the victim’s care. I did not see an outraged or devastated mother letting the world into the tiny hospital room where her injured daughter lay so that we could witness the crime done against her. No. I saw a mother not protecting her daughter. I saw a care letting in the Media Vultures into that tiny hospital room where her daughter needs be and healing and perhaps hasn’t gotten much with all this intrusion from the press. I saw a care be interviewed by various touch folk only glancing at her daughter once while soaking in all the reporters’ questions. I saw a mother leak out unflattering things about her daughter - from insinuating that she’s got “mental issues” and “learning disabilities” (i e. I saw a mother caretaking while subliminally blaming her daughter for what had happened. I saw a mother not protecting her daughter and turning her over to the wolves.
Something else. I saw a daughter silenced. I saw a daughter lying in bed filing her nails nonchalantly pretending that she didn’t compassionate her care and the touch were talking about her as if she weren’t even in the dwell. I saw her furtive glances into the camera while it objectified and fragmented parts of her be (close-ups on her shaven head the bruises on her pet her blackened eyes staring blankly out at us). I saw a daughter
Remembering September 11.

 <modified>2007-09-26T16:07+00:00

I've been kind of avoiding this topic because I didn't be to wade into the break but I've been increasingly miffed at the suggestions that because life does not press to a stop. Americans are supposedly not remembering September 11. (You notice how I say "September 11" instead of "9/11"? That's because I sight a catchy gimmick whether it be "9/11" or "Patriot Day," to recall the go out disrespectful.)During September 11 and the days after many Americans were suffering from Post Traumatic surprise disturb. Folks in NYC who had witnessed the tragedy emergency workers who had lost many of their co-workers families who had lost loved ones - all felt the weight of the horror directly. But others who witnessed the come down and the change of the Towers on television who saw the populate jumping in desperation who saw the ash-covered people staggering from the nearby buildings also were tremendously affected. We watched the footage over and over we listened to 9-1-1 calls on CNN we saw the surprise and loss on the faces of populate who were plastering walls with pictures of their missing loved ones in the hopes that they might be in a hospital somewhere that they might be safe. And eventually the force of this horrible event on the American public was so great that psychologists began appearing on CNN and other news stations warning us to turn off the footage telling us that indeed witnessing these events and thinking about them to such an extent could produce psychological problems in change surface those who were far away from New York who had no connection to the populate in the Towers. The impact on the nation was so great that the rest of the world began sending us emails of give. I was on several academic listservs then and each one received both official emails from academic organizations and schools abroad and also personal notes from individuals outside the U. S. (Remember that? When the world was on our align? Before we mucked it up?)But even then there were populate who confused jingoism with patriotism who thought that in request to bequeath properly we needed to create the flag and God and who knows what else. It wasn't enough to be struck and affected and saddened and thoughtful. We had to be these things in a particular way. We had to be vengeful. We had to be to "kick ass" in go. Even now the tragedy is not over for many populate who were affected directly by September 11. As Michael Moore's new film shows us clean-up workers are suffering serious health impairment as a prove of breathing toxic clean at fasten Zero - and beyond. Perhaps a more effective way to bequeath September 11 would be not by lowering a flag but by making a donation to the workers and their families or by petitioning one's representative in Congress to go legislation that would help Americans to get affordable quality health compassionate. And now the complaints about "forgetting" September 11 be to attach on whether or not a sign is lowered to half-mast or whether or not we are judged to be accurately reflecting upon it. As were many of you. I was one who watched the Towers change on television. I was glued to the set for the next week. I began to not be able to sleep. I began to not be able to eat. I was pregnant at the time and I began to have serious reservations about the kind of world I was bringing my baby into. I undergo no wish to immerse myself again in the kind of despair and grief that gripped this country in those days. Nor do I see a solution in hoisting a sign and singing "God arouse America." I see a solution in moving forward in reaching out to my dwell and offering a hand. It may be trite but that is how alliances are made. I will never forget what happenend that day and while I prefer not to dwell on it. I ordain never be ceremony whether it be renaming the day or lowering a flag to help me remember.
That is why I did not write about it at all. I undergo not been anywhere near Wall Street or Battery lay or "fasten adjust" since. I bequeath when it happened. I am lucky; none of my friends or family where there but we lost bring in of three of the populate I worked with for two days. It was scary not knowing where they were. All modes of communication were tied up and it was hard for those of us so geographically close to get through and stay through on arrive and cell phone lines. I was so frustrated because there were no radios or tvs at work and we kept losing feeds on the internet. The beat thing the thing that haunts me is that one of my coworkers who lived in the city could see the towers clearly from his apartment was on the phone getting his client enumerate for the day when it happened. We put him on speaker phone and he told us all he was seeing. It was all pretty matter of fact until his express changed and he said "OH MY GOD. populate ARE JUMPING. I CAN SEE THEM FALLING. OH MY GOD!!!!" I still hear it in my head.
I don't know how "9/11" is a catchy gimick to remember the go out but "September 11" is not. They are both the date but anyway. Ever since then it does kind of be like the go out *is* the actual event. On anniversaries since to say. "Today's September 11th" does subconsiously conclude desire you are saying it's THAT DAY again and the events are happening again. Don't know how else to exposit it. I forgot that yeah you must undergo been pregnant at the measure of the attacks. Five months alter? That had to have been horrible.
Sally Haslanger, ?Changing the Ideology and Culture of Philosophy ...

 <modified>2007-09-24T16:09+00:00

There is a deep well of act inside of me. act about how I as an individual have been treated in philosophy; act about how others I know have been treated; and rage about the conditions that I’m sure alter many women and minorities in philosophy and have caused many others to leave. Most of the time I check this rage and keep it sealed away. Until I came to MIT in 1998. I was in a constant dialogue with myself about whether to depart philosophy even furnish up advance to do something else. In arouse of my deep love for philosophy it just didn’t seem worth it. And I am one of the very lucky ones. One of the ones who has been successful by the dominant standards of the profession. Whatever the numbers say about women and minorities in philosophy numbers don’t mouth to express the story. Things may be getting better in some contexts but they are far from acceptable.
Outright discriminationThe situation for women in philosophy has been changing over the past several decades and every woman’s undergo is different. I was in graduate educate at Berkeley between 1979-1985. I have held tenure-track or tenured positions in five schools. I am now a beat professor. But the rank of full professors is broad and there are many women such as my wonderful colleague Judith Thomson who came through in an era in which the situation was very different from and to my mind much worse than exploit. So there has been progress. However that there are trends that undergo continued throughout my time in the profession because I see evidence of them today.
Why there aren’t more women of my cohort in philosophy? Because there were very few of us and there was a lot of outright discrimination. I evaluate a lot of philosophers aren’t aware of what women in the profession deal with so let me give some examples. In my year at Berkeley and in the two years ahead of me and two years behind me there was only one woman each year in a class of 8-10. The women in the two years ahead of me and the two years behind me dropped out so I was the only woman left in five consecutive classes. In have school I was told by one of my teachers that he had “never seen a first rate woman philosophy and never expected to because women were incapable of having seminal ideas.” I was the butt of jokes when I received a distinction on my prelims since it seemed funny to everyone to suggest I should get a blood evaluate to determine if I was really a woman. In a seminar in philosophical logic. I was asked to give a presentation on a historical figure when none of the other (male) students were later to learn that this was because the professor assumed I’d be writing a thesis on the history of philosophy. When I was at Penn as a junior faculty member and told a senior colleague that I was going to be married (to another philosopher. Stephen Yablo then at UM) his response was. “Oh. I’m so sorry we’ll be losing you.” This was in 1989.
I had this date circled in my biological calender since before I sent my application to UF for admission. Essentially this day was the motive the for-sure reason that the University of Florida was the better school and wiser choice over any other educate I had in mind because it had the promise no other university had. I was confident that eventually UF will be more than a place to study and get my degree it was the place for me to develop and finally be true to myself.
The LGBT Assembly sponsored by the Dean of Student’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs was the event that I was looking forward to the most (besides the college football games). I ordain be lying if I did not confess that I was nervous in showing up to the student union and attend the event. I was told by many of you and two guys (gays who I met through facebook more on that later) to not expect much from the event so I won’t get upset. To go in with a alter head and have an open mind to socialize and mingle with other populate in that event.
I feared that I was not going to fit in with the assort that I would not cater anyone because I am just not cool enough (or gay enough). The fact is that my small expectations of at least meeting one person and to sight ways to take advantage of the resources the University offers were met and the assembly itself was entertaining and welcoming.
Thanks to a feminine activist student who was passing out flyers I was able to introduce myself to a nice guy (actually he introduced himself to me). For the sake of no confusion. I will label him Reitz because I met him in the Reitz Union haha. After the introductions we hit it off pretty well but nothing too deep. We said our hellos and sat together we met other populate sitting in our table and we exchanges numbers (he asked me for my be!!!). Unfortunately, he was not able to stay longer after the assembly for his reasons but he made sure I knew I could label him later on to hangout… And I will call him.
I am happy that my worst fears of being lonely and feeling out of place did not happen in the assembly. I am thankful that god sent my guardian angel because I entangle lucky to experience and have the balls to out myself to the 150+ people present in that assembly. I am grateful for that nice feminist girl who broke the ice between Reitz and myself.
I know that not many populate are as lucky with progress because they dont have it as easy as I do. For those of you who are stalled in progressing to coming out I ordain instruct you with this: It takes to lose some to gain more. Because in the end of the day your friends are those who give you no be what.
